Plan the Perfect Beach Day in Key West

Turn on your out-of-office reply and get into full vacation mode when you spend a day on the white-sand beaches of Key West. Take in the stunning ocean views while you soak up the sun or enjoy a variety of activities, such as watersports, from the best Key West beaches. Read on for our guide to planning the perfect beach day in Key West.

Choose Your Beach

The first step in planning your beach day is choosing the right beach. Key West offers a variety of beaches that are suitable for all different types of travelers. If you’re visiting with the kids, head to Smathers Beach. The largest beach in Key West, it offers public restrooms, lounge chairs, and gear rental shops. If you have a four-legged family member in tow, Dog Beach is where your furry friend can splash and play without a leash. For the perfect day trip, journey to Dry Tortugas. Located 90 miles from Key West and accessible by ferry, Dry Tortugas is where you’ll find stunning tropical landscapes and the third-largest coral reef system in the world.

Pack Your Bags

After you choose your beach destination, it’s time to gather your beach essentials. Key West enjoys tropical temperatures all year long. So pack a bathing suit and towel, and don’t skimp on sunscreen — Key West has a UV index ranging from six in the winter (sunburn in 30 minutes without sunscreen) to 11 in the summer (sunburn in just 15 minutes without sunscreen). Make the most of your time at the beach by packing lunch so you don’t have to give up your coveted spot on the sand. You can pick up something delicious from one of the manyrestaurants near our Stock Island resort.

Plan Your Activities

Whether you want to enjoy an action-packed day on the water or a relaxing day laying on the sand with yourfavorite book, ensure your day at the beach is one you won’t soon forget. Those heading to Smathers Beach can enjoy a variety of water sports, such as kayaking and parasailing. Those making the trip to Dry Tortugas will enjoy scuba diving at one of the world’s largest coral reefs or exploring the famous Fort Jefferson.
